What makes it special

Why couples choose it

Shinen, the nationally designated scenic garden of Heian Jingu Shrine

01 / 03

A garden with national designation

Shinen is not a hotel garden. It is a designated place of scenic beauty, built by a lineage of celebrated gardeners, and it changes completely between March and November.

SEIHOU-DEN hall with thirty metres of windows facing the garden

02 / 03

Thirty metres of open window

SEIHOU-DEN runs thirty metres of window along the garden in traditional Japanese architecture. All-weather, which matters in a city where the best months are also the wettest.

Banquet hall configured for a large celebration

03 / 03

Small, or very large

Halls can be partitioned for twenty guests or opened out for two hundred. Take the whole building and it handles more than three hundred - among the largest in Kyoto.

About the venue

The full picture

Heian Jingu Shrine Restaurant & Banquet Hall stands on the south bank of Seiho-ike Pond, inside the East Garden of Heian Jingu Shrine. It was built in 1969 to mark the shrine's 70th anniversary and reopened in 2018 after renovation, with an irimoya roof in copper that has weathered to verdigris.

The garden it faces, Shinen, is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty - a strolling garden drawing on a thousand years of Heian-kyo landscape technique, with Higashiyama borrowed as background. Weeping cherry in spring, maple in autumn, and full-height windows in every direction so the season is always in the room.
