What makes it special

The Grand Ball Room's height follows Shoin architecture, where ceiling height signalled status. The transom carries the Higashiyama silhouette carved into a single board.

03 / 03
The open terrace looks across the Kamo River to the thirty-six peaks of Higashiyama, with nothing in the way. Cherry blossom lines Kiyamachi in spring.
About the venue
Funatsuru opened in 1870 as a Japanese inn and restaurant on the Kamo River, and spent a century as a salon for Kyoto's writers and artists. The five-storey wooden building was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2012, and now operates as Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort.
It sits on Kiyamachi-dori, the street of Edo-period teahouses that has appeared in more Japanese novels than almost any other address in Kyoto. For couples who want Kyoto to be the wedding rather than the backdrop, the location does most of the work before anything is planned.
